VinFast’s Ultra-Luxury Lac Hong Pivot

VinFast is nothing if not ambitious. In the time it takes most legacy automakers to redesign a cupholder, the Vietnamese upstart has built a factory, launched a global EV lineup, and apparently decided that the standard luxury market is simply too crowded. Enter Lac Hong, the newly minted ultra-luxury marque from the house of VinFast. Named after the mythical ancestors of the Vietnamese people, the brand is making its debut with two flagship sedans, the 800S and the 900S, aimed squarely at the likes of Maybach, Bentley, and Rolls-Royce. It is a bold move, or a confusing one, depending on whether you think the brand has earned the right to charge three hundred thousand dollars for a hood ornament.
The 900S is the one that really wants your attention. It features a wheelbase long enough to have its own zip code and a rear passenger compartment that looks more like a private jet lounge than a car interior. We are talking about silk-blend upholstery, handcrafted wood inlays sourced from sustainable forests, and enough ambient lighting to simulate a sunset in Da Nang. Underneath the opulence is a quad-motor electric powertrain that supposedly delivers over one thousand horsepower, which is plenty of thrust to ensure the champagne in the rear fridge does not stay settled for long.
However, there is a giant, elephant-sized question mark hanging over the whole enterprise. VinFast is still very much in the middle of a massive global expansion, and their primary brand is still working through the growing pains that come with being a newcomer. Launching an ultra-luxury spin-off while your main volume sellers are still establishing their reliability is a high-wire act without a net. The luxury market is built on heritage and the quiet confidence that comes from decades of excellence. You cannot simply buy prestige, even if you have a very large marketing budget and a lot of chrome trim.
That said, you have to admire the sheer audacity of the play. The 800S and 900S are technically impressive machines on paper. They offer level four autonomous capabilities and a digital concierge system that uses biometric sensors to adjust the cabin temperature based on your stress levels. It is the kind of technology that makes a current S-Class look like a rotary phone. But will a buyer who has spent their life in the back of a Flying Spur really be willing to take a chance on a brand that didn't exist a decade ago? That is the multi-billion dollar gamble that VinFast is taking with Lac Hong.
If you find yourself looking at the 900S and thinking that it looks great but maybe you would rather stick with something a bit more proven, you are certainly not alone. The luxury market is currently flooded with incredible options that have already taken their initial depreciation hit.
