The 641-Horsepower Genesis GV60 Magma Is a $71,000 Electric Hot Hatch Masquerading as a Luxury SUV

Genesis wants to take on AMG and M with bright orange paint, fake gear shifts, and a price tag that will make German executives sweat.
The 641-Horsepower Genesis GV60 Magma Is a $71,000 Electric Hot Hatch Masquerading as a Luxury SUV

When Hyundai Motor Group launched the high-performance Hyundai Ioniq 5 N, car enthusiasts quickly realized that the Korean automaker actually understood how to make an electric vehicle genuinely thrilling to drive. Now, Hyundai luxury arm Genesis is taking that same absurd performance hardware, wrapping it in premium suede and leather, and launching its new Magma performance sub-brand. The first official production model out of the gate is the 2027 Genesis GV60 Magma EV, and Genesis has officially announced that pricing will start at $69,950, which translates to $71,495 once you factor in the mandatory destination charge.

For that price point, you get a luxury electric crossover that puts up acceleration numbers previously reserved for exotic supercars. The upgraded dual-motor all-wheel-drive system produces more than 600 horsepower in everyday driving modes. However, when you tap the dedicated orange Boost button mounted directly on the steering wheel, the powertrain temporarily unleashes a massive 641 horsepower and 583 pound-feet of torque for fifteen seconds at a time. That is enough raw grunt to shoot this aerodynamic luxury egg from zero to sixty miles per hour in a blistering 3.4 seconds, supported by an electronic limited-slip differential, a lowered stance, and sticky tires wrapped around bespoke twenty-one-inch forged wheels.

What makes the GV60 Magma so fascinating is not just its sheer straight-line speed, but the sheer amount of driver-focused theater Genesis engineered into the vehicle. The car comes equipped with Virtual Gear Shift, a clever software system that recreates the physical sensation, torque interruption, and rev-matching feedback of a traditional eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. It also includes synthesized sound profiles that pipe simulated engine notes inside and outside the cabin, along with a dedicated Drift Mode designed to balance front and rear torque when you feel like turning expensive performance tires into smoke on a closed course.

Traditional sports car purists might initially turn up their noses at synthetic gear shifts and artificial exhaust tones in a battery-powered vehicle. But anyone who has actually spent time behind the wheel of its Ioniq 5 N sibling knows that these digital features turn what could have been a silent, sterile speed pod into an engaging driver machine. By providing physical gear feedback, the car forces you to pay attention to your entry speeds and cornering lines instead of simply mashing an accelerator pedal and watching the scenery blur past in total silence.

Underneath the aggressive front aero canards, fender breathers, and rear winglets lies an eighty-four kilowatt-hour battery pack resting on the group eight-hundred-volt E-GMP platform. That high-voltage architecture allows the Magma to charge from ten to eighty percent in as little as eighteen minutes when plugged into a three-hundred-fifty kilowatt DC fast charger. The obvious trade-off for all this high-output hardware is an EPA-estimated driving range of just 222 miles. If you regularly engage Launch Control and Sprint Mode on your commute, you can expect that range figure to drop even lower.

At just over seventy-one thousand dollars, the GV60 Magma is certainly not cheap for a compact crossover, but it looks like a relative bargain compared to its European competition. A properly equipped Porsche Macan EV or electric Mercedes-AMG crossover will easily push deep into six-figure territory before you even start ticking boxes for extra performance options. Genesis is delivering genuine track-tuned suspension, specialized interior bucket seats, and undeniable road presence for a far more reasonable price tag. It is loud, theatrical, and refreshingly fun, proving that performance EVs do not have to feel like solemn appliance demonstrations.
