The 2026 Electric GLC is here, and it wants to have a conversation with you.
Mercedes-Benz at CES: The "Vegan" Hyperscreen and the Pivot to AI You Can Drive

Las Vegas is usually where logic goes to die, which makes it the perfect place for CES. This year, amidst the sea of useless robotic dogs and smart toasters, Mercedes-Benz actually showed us a car. A real one. The 2026 Electric GLC just made its U.S. debut, and if the press materials are to be believed, it’s less of an SUV and more of a sentient, cruelty-free lounge on wheels.

Let’s get the specs out of the way first, because they are actually impressive. The new Electric GLC rides on an 800-volt architecture (thank you), pushing out 483 horsepower and promising a range of around 440 miles (713 km). That puts it firmly in "road trip viable" territory, which is good because you’re going to need a lot of time to figure out how to use the interior.

The headline feature isn’t the motor, though. It’s the "Physical AI." Mercedes is leaning hard into the buzzword of the decade, integrating a mashup of Google logic and ChatGPT-4o into the MBUX system. The idea is that the car doesn't just listen to voice commands; it understands context. You don’t say "Turn on seat heater." You say, "I’m chilly," and the car supposedly figures out the rest, adjusting the climate, the heated seats, and probably the ambient lighting to a warm amber hue because it "senses your vibe."

But the real kicker is the interior material. Mercedes is calling this the world’s first "independently certified vegan interior" in a production car. And they mean certified. The Vegan Society (yes, that’s a real thing) apparently audited everything from the steering wheel adhesive to the sun visor foam.

The centerpiece of this animal-friendly sanctuary is, of course, the Hyperscreen. It’s back, it’s 39.1 inches wide, and it spans the entire dashboard like a glass surfboard. In the EQS, it felt like overkill. In a mid-size SUV like the GLC, it feels like you’re driving an IMAX theater.

Is this what we asked for? Probably not. Most of us just want physical buttons for the A/C and a volume knob that doesn't require a master’s degree to operate. But Mercedes is betting that the future of luxury isn’t about leather and wood anymore—it’s about screens, software, and the moral superiority of knowing no cows were involved in your morning commute.

Whether or not "Physical AI" is useful or just a fancier way to get ignored by your car remains to be seen. but one thing is clear: The 2026 Electric GLC is arguably the most tech-dense appliance you can park in your garage. Just don't spill a milkshake on that vegan upholstery.
