A 1,140-Horsepower Chinese Wagon Just Stole the Show at Goodwood

The Goodwood Festival of Speed is legendary for its vibrant mix of historic tire smoke, screaming combustion engines, and the occasional modern electric oddity. At the 2026 event, the manicured lawn of Goodwood House played host to a very quiet, yet extremely powerful, invader. The Denza Z9 GT made its highly anticipated dynamic UK hillclimb debut in front of thousands of British petrolheads, automotive journalists, and industry veterans. Denza, the upscale sub-brand of Chinese automotive powerhouse BYD, did not just bring their flagship shooting brake for static display on a carpeted stand. They sent it charging up the tight, hay-bale-lined hillclimb course, aiming to prove that luxury transport from Shenzhen is ready to challenge traditional European royalty on its own asphalt.
On paper, the Z9 GT reads like a checklist of enthusiast dreams wrapped in futuristic sheet metal. This is not a boring family crossover built to haul groceries; it is a low-slung, aggressive five-door fastback wagon designed to make Porsche Panamera and Taycan Sport Turismo buyers look twice. The electric version features three electric motors that generate a staggering 1,140 horsepower and 1,150 Newton-meters of torque. This tri-motor configuration rocketed the heavy luxury shooting brake up the Goodwood track, completing the run in well under a minute without breaking a sweat. The vehicle can scramble from zero to sixty-two miles per hour in just 2.7 seconds, a dynamic figure that rivals some of the world’s most exclusive track-focused hypercars.
But the Z9 GT is not just a straight-line weapon designed for drag strips. During its Goodwood showcase, the vehicle demonstrated its advanced chassis hardware, including the second-generation Blade battery and BYD’s flash charging capability. More importantly, it displayed its unusual rear-wheel steering party trick, known as the Compass U-Turn. By spinning the rear wheels in opposite directions, the heavy wagon can literally pivot on its axis or crab-walk into tight parking spaces. Drivers watching the run noted how easily the massive machine navigated the legendary tight corners of the hillclimb, demonstrating how advanced software can mask immense curb weight.
Step inside the cabin, and the sporty, aggressive nature of the exterior gives way to absolute, uncompromising luxury. The interior features premium Nappa leather seats equipped with heating, ventilation, and massage functions that can satisfy any tired driver. The passenger gets an independent digital screen with a live video feed, there are digital side mirrors for improved aerodynamic efficiency, a high-end Devialet audio system, and even dual onboard refrigerators that can cool drinks to near-freezing or warm up snacks. Unlike lightweight electric track cars that strip out every comfort to save weight, this grand tourer represents the modern luxury philosophy where comfort is never sacrificed for absolute pace. It is a dual-personality executive cruiser.
Charging is another area where BYD intends to rewrite the rules. The Z9 GT supports flash charging of up to 1,500 kilowatts, which theoretically allows the battery to replenish from ten percent to ninety-seven percent in just nine minutes. Finding a charging station capable of delivering that kind of power is a separate challenge altogether, especially in a European market where utility infrastructure is still playing catch-up. Despite these rollout hurdles, having the technical capability to absorb that much power in under ten minutes shows how fast battery research is moving and highlights the technological leaps Chinese automakers are making.
Priced at approximately 105,000 pounds in the United Kingdom, the Denza Z9 GT sits firmly in premium territory. The challenge for BYD will not be the raw hardware specs, which are undeniably impressive, but rather the hard, long-term task of brand building. Convincing traditional European buyers to skip German heritage or classic British marques in favor of a new Chinese nameplate is a formidable obstacle. However, by launching a stunning, high-performance shooting brake instead of another cookie-cutter crossover, Denza is making a strong emotional statement. The dynamic Goodwood showing demonstrates that the luxury electric market is no longer a cozy European club, and established brands will need to keep looking over their shoulders.
